Our theme for the upcoming Halfsister Displays is Collections and will take place on July 8th from 2 till 10PM. On this day we will display collection sets by us and others. We will also have some food, drinks, back-gammon, clothing and fortunetelling in the form of coffee reading/ tasseography. Pop-up Ausstellung und Performance
Ein Abend mit der Eröffnung einer Pop-up-Ausstellung über die politische und literarische Freundschaft zwischen den Schriftstellerinnen Bettina von Arnim aus Berlin und Julia Woykowska aus Poznan und die Zeit der Märzrevolution und des Völkerfrühlings. Begleitet wird die Eröffnung von der performativen Lesung von Briefen und Auszügen aus Büchern der beiden Schriftstellerinnen in einem zeitgenössischen Dialog zwischen der Schauspielerin Mareike Wenzel aus Berlin und der Künstlerin Anna Krenz aus Poznan, der sich auf aktuelle Freiheitskämpfe bezieht.
„Sisters in Arms” ist die Geschichte der Freundschaft zwischen zwei Schriftstellerinnen, Bettina von Arnim aus Berlin und Julia Molińska-Woykowska aus Poznan (Polen). Es ist ein weiterer Teil einer Reihe von Projekten mit dem Titel “Die fehlende Hälfte der Geschichte”, ein Versuch, die polnisch-deutsche Geschichte zu vervollständigen, indem an Frauen erinnert wird – vergessene Heldinnen, die aus den Seiten der Geschichte getilgt wurden, polnische Frauen, die vor 100 Jahren gemeinsam mit Frauen in Deutschland für ihre Rechte kämpften, die Opfer von Kriegen und Unterdrückung waren, aber auch Kämpferinnen, die viele Formen der Aktion, darunter auch Worte, einsetzten.
Im Jahr 2023 möchten wir über die Bedeutung des Freiheitskampfes während des Völkerfrühlings und der polnisch-deutschen Schwesternschaft im 19. Jahrhundert nachdenken, indem wir zwei Frauen, Julia Molińska-Woykowska aus Poznań und Bettine von Arnim aus Berlin, einander gegenüberstellen, die gemeinsam für Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit kämpften. Beide stammen aus guten Familien, beide schrieben Bücher, Artikel und Briefe, beide waren im Verlagswesen und im sozialen Bereich tätig. Beide setzten sich für die Armen und für soziale Gerechtigkeit ein. Beide waren auf ihre eigene Art unkonventionell und befreit.
1848 trafen sie sich in Berlin, als Julia Molińska-Woykowska kam, um für die Freilassung des Anwalts, Umstürzlers und Revolutionärs Jakub Krauthofer-Krotowski zu kämpfen. Diese Episode, die Freundschaft der beiden Frauen und ihr gemeinsames Handeln, ist kaum beschrieben und wird in historischen Texten über die Männer und ihre Leistungen während des Volkskrieges und der Märzrevolution oft übersehen. Im polnischen Fall in Berlin geht es vor allem um den „Polenprozess” und den Mythos von Ludwik Mieroslawski oder Krauthofer-Krotowski. Aber was weiß man über die Frauen, die für das Wohlergehen der arbeitenden Menschen, für die Freiheit der Nationen oder die Befreiung dieser Männer gekämpft haben? Bettine von Arnim half Julia Molińska-Woykowska bei ihren Kontakten zu hochrangigen Beamten, und Julia Molińska-Woykowska lieferte Bettine von Arnim in ihren späteren Briefen viele wertvolle Quelleninformationen über Polen für ihre “Polenbroschüre”. Die Rolle von Julia Molińska-Woykowska bei den Entwicklungen der polnischen Sache während der Märzrevolution und des Völkerfrühlings wird unterschätzt. Die Veröffentlichungen von Bettine von Arnim (nicht nur die, die Polen betreffen) sind in Polen nicht sehr bekannt. Das Wissen, die schriftstellerische Tätigkeit und das Engagement dieser Frauen in den Freiheitskämpfen und für die Rechte der Unterdrückten ist ein Beitrag zur Diskussion über die deutsch-polnische Freundschaft heute, über künstlerische Formen des Aktivismus und über zeitgenössische Freiheitskämpfe.

Pop-up Exhibition and Performance
An evening with the opening of a pop-up exhibition on the political and literary friendship between the writers Bettina von Arnim from Berlin and Julia Woykowska from Poznan, and the time of the March Revolution and the Spring of Nations. The opening will be accompanied by a performative reading of letters and excerpts from the books of both writers, in a contemporary dialogue between the actress Mareike Wenzel from Berlin and the artist Anna Krenz from Poznan, which relates to current struggles for freedom.
“Sisters in Arms” is the story of the friendship between two writers, Bettina von Arnim from Berlin and Julia Molińska-Woykowska from Poznan, Poland. It is another part of a series of projects titled “The Missing Half of History,” an attempt to complete Polish-German history by remembering women – forgotten heroines who were erased from the pages of history. Polish women who, 100 years ago, fought alongside women in Germany for their rights, were victims of wars and oppression, but also fighters who utilized various forms of action, including words.
In 2023, we want to reflect on the significance of the fight for freedom during the Spring of Nations and the Polish-German sisterhood in the 19th century by juxtaposing two women, Julia Molińska-Woykowska from Poznan and Bettina von Arnim from Berlin, who fought together for freedom and independence. Both came from privileged families, both wrote books, articles, and letters, both were involved in publishing and social work. Both advocated for the poor and social justice. Both were unconventional and liberated in their own ways.
They met in Berlin in 1848 when Julia Molińska-Woykowska came to fight for the release of the lawyer, conspirator, and revolutionary Jakub Krauthofer-Krotowski. This episode, the friendship between the two women, and their collective actions are scarcely described and often overlooked in historical texts that focus on men and their achievements during the People’s War and the March Revolution. In the Polish case in Berlin, it mainly revolves around the “Polish Trial” and the myth of Ludwik Mieroslawski or Krauthofer-Krotowski. But what do we know about the women who fought for the well-being of the working people, the freedom of nations, or the liberation of these men? Bettina von Arnim assisted Julia Molińska-Woykowska in her contacts with high-ranking officials, and Julia Molińska-Woykowska provided Bettina von Arnim with valuable source information about Poland in her later letters for her “Poland Brochure.” The role of Julia Molińska-Woykowska in the developments of the Polish cause during the March Revolution and the Spring of Nations is underestimated. The publications of Bettina von Arnim (not only those related to Poland) are not widely known in Poland. The knowledge, literary work, and commitment of these women in the fight for freedom and the rights of the oppressed contribute to the discussion on German-Polish friendship today, artistic forms of activism, and contemporary struggles for freedom.

Otwarcie będzie towarzyszyć performatywnemu czytaniu listów i fragmentów książek obu autorek, w nowoczesnym dialogu między aktorką Mareike Wenzel z Berlina a artystką Anną Krenz z Poznania, nawiązującym do aktualnych walk o wolność.
“Sisters in Arms” to historia przyjaźni między dwiema pisarkami, Bettiną von Arnim z Berlina i Julią Molińską-Woykowską z Poznania, w Polsce. Jest to kolejna część serii projektów zatytułowanych “Brakująca połowa historii”, próba uzupełnienia polsko-niemieckiej historii poprzez upamiętnienie kobiet – zapomnianych bohaterek, które zostały wymazane z kart historii. Polskie kobiety, które przed 100 laty walczyły wraz z kobietami w Niemczech o swoje prawa, były ofiarami wojen i ucisku, ale także wojowniczkami, które wykorzystywały różne formy działania, w tym słowa.
W 2023 roku pragniemy zastanowić się nad znaczeniem walki o wolność podczas Wiosny Ludów i polsko-niemieckiego siostrzeństwa w XIX wieku, zestawiając dwie kobiety, Julię Molińską-Woykowską z Poznania i Bettinę von Arnim z Berlina, które wspólnie walczyły o wolność i niezależność. Obie pochodziły z zamożnych rodzin, obie pisały książki, artykuły i listy, obie były zaangażowane w wydawnictwa i pracę społeczną. Obie opowiadały się za biednymi i sprawiedliwością społeczną. Obie były nieszablonowe i wolne na swój sposób.
Spotkały się w Berlinie w 1848 roku, kiedy Julia Molińska-Woykowska przybyła, aby walczyć o uwolnienie prawnika, spiskowca i rewolucjonisty Jakuba Krauthofera-Krotowskiego. Rola Julii Molińskiej-Woykowskiej w rozwoju sprawy polskiej podczas Marcowej Rewolucji i Wiosny Ludów jest niedoceniana. Publikacje Bettiny von Arnim (nie tylko te dotyczące Polski) nie są szeroko znane w Polsce. Wiedza, twórczość literacka i zaangażowanie tych kobiet w walkę o wolność i prawa uciskanych stanowi wkład w dyskusję na temat dzisiejszej niemiecko-polskiej przyjaźni, artystycznych form aktywizmu i współczesnych walk o wolność.
